The recent feature in The Kiplinger Letter, “VR TECH,” spotlights the evolving landscape of virtual and mixed reality (MR) technologies. Interestingly, the article focuses on a device I would not consider a VR headset—the Apple Vision Pro. As we delve into the capabilities and implications of this device, it’s evident that the era of MR is not just upon us but poised to reshape the way enterprises operate.

The era of Mixed Reality Devices really started in 2016 with the shipment of the HoloLens 1 from Microsoft. This device invented the term Mixed Reality and defined a new market segment almost 10 years ago, but the Vision Pro is finally bringing that vision to the mainstream.

In my recent experience with the Vision Pro, alongside esteemed Mixed Reality MVPs and Microsoft product teams, the device’s exceptional optics and spatial understanding stood out. However, its journey to widespread adoption faces challenges, particularly due to its premium price point and the current scarcity of impactful software applications.

Despite these hurdles, the potential for consumer and enterprise adoption in the device’s second generation is promising. Apple’s commitment to developing a more affordable version, coupled with an expanding ecosystem of software, is likely to catalyze significant interest. As we’ve seen with the evolution of smartphones, once consumer adoption takes off, demand by users in the enterprise sector is inevitable.

Currently, MR devices are most extensively used in sectors such as healthcare, manufacturing, and the military. While there’s a burgeoning interest in entertainment, retail, and real estate, the complexity of device usage has limited broader applications. Simplifying the user experience will be crucial in unlocking the full potential of MR for both consumers and enterprises.

The calibration process of the Vision Pro, involving eye tracking and spatial adjustments, underscores the need for a more user-friendly approach. The absence of multi-user support is a notable limitation, highlighting the importance of continuous innovation in making MR devices more accessible and practical for widespread use.

As the AI Practice Director at New Resources Consulting (NRC), my focus is on harnessing the synergies between MR and AI to drive transformative outcomes for enterprises. NRC possesses the expertise and capabilities to support your enterprise in navigating the complexities of MR and AI integration. The MR landscape is evolving rapidly, with devices like the Vision Pro marking the dawn of a new era in digital interaction. As we look to the future, the role of MR in the enterprise will become increasingly prominent. At New Resources Consulting, we are committed to guiding businesses through this journey, ensuring they are well-positioned to capitalize on the opportunities that MR and AI present.
