Meet Mike Engel—a seasoned systems administrator, lifelong music enthusiast, and cornerstone of NRC’s Managed Services team. With over two decades of experience in PeopleSoft and database administration, Mike is critical in keeping client systems secure, optimized, and future-ready. He brings not only technical mastery but also a collaborative spirit that helps define the culture of NRC’s Enterprise Solutions Group.
We caught up with Mike to learn more about his work, his perspective on growth, and—spoiler alert—his love for Casey Kasem’s Top 40.
What is your job title?
Sr. PeopleSoft Systems Administrator
Beyond your title, how would you describe what you do at NRC and for your clients?
With over 23 years of experience in PeopleSoft Administration, as well as Oracle and SQL Server database management, I oversee multiple client accounts by deploying, installing, and upgrading their PeopleSoft environments. I keep their systems current with the latest Critical Patch Updates to maintain security and performance. I also check in daily with clients to monitor system health, troubleshoot issues, and ensure users are satisfied with performance.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
I plan to continue contributing my expertise at NRC and mentoring others along the way. I’m always looking to grow and adapt, so I’d like to be in a position where I can support key projects, help junior team members succeed, and keep learning new skills. Above all, I want to stay engaged, productive, and aligned with our clients’ evolving needs.
What accomplishments are you most proud of?
Leading a major upgrade for the University of Wisconsin–Stout stands out. The project involved jumping several PeopleTools versions and delivering the latest Financials PUM. I uncovered infrastructure inefficiencies, modernized their setup, and enhanced overall performance. We coordinated cross-functional teams, met tight deadlines, and minimized downtime, ultimately finishing in under five months and within budget. It was incredibly rewarding to see the upgrade position them for long-term success and highlight NRC’s strengths in innovation and execution.
How have you grown professionally at NRC?
Working across multiple University of Wisconsin campuses has been a big part of my growth, especially at UW–Madison, where I served as the sole PeopleSoft Administrator for their Financials systems. I developed streamlined scripting for patching, delivered consistent upgrades, and adapted to new PeopleTools versions. I’ve also mentored fellow administrators, which has helped build both my leadership and technical skills.
What challenges have you faced—and how did you overcome them?
Time zone differences with clients have been tricky. I’ve stayed flexible by adjusting my hours to match their schedules. Maintaining and upgrading PeopleSoft environments often requires late nights or weekend work. Despite the challenges that a shifting schedule may bring, I’ve remained proactive, respectful, and innovative in maintaining these environments. This is especially true for some clients whose systems run on unsupported PeopleTools versions. That’s pushed me to be creative and resilient, always looking for smart ways to keep things running smoothly.
What do you enjoy most about working for NRC?
I truly enjoy being a part of the Managed Services team at NRC. The commitment and dedication of each team member to our clients’ success is inspiring. I’m grateful to work alongside such skilled professionals who are not only experts in their fields but also passionate about delivering outstanding service and ensuring client satisfaction.
Tell us something most people don’t know about you.
I was a disc jockey for 15 years and majored in Broadcast Journalism, which fueled my lifelong passion for music, especially Pop Music. One of the coolest things I did when I turned 50 (a few years ago now, but who’s counting?!) was creating a list of my favorite songs for every year of my life. My all-time favorite album is Play Deep by The Outfield (1985), and I proudly display several of my favorite albums on my office wall. I’m also a huge Beatles fan.
Many people remember American Top 40 with Casey Kasem. I not only remember it, but I own every single countdown from his entire run on the show (1970 – 1988). If there’s ever a music trivia contest, you definitely want me on your team!
